Consumer Healthcare : Charting the Course
The rise of consumer healthcare may be the single most disruptive force in the US healthcare system today. The tidal wave of consumer demand for wellness, personalized medicine, alternative care, and longevity-focused treatments is being driven in turn not only by consumer taste and consumption patterns, but by forces that are themselves secular shifts in care delivery. These include generational preferences and turnover, care access challenges, virtual and in-home modalities, novel therapeutic applications for drugs, and AI applications in care management, behavior change, and clinical interpretation.
Healthcare investors are increasingly taking note of these tailwinds. We have noted growing investor interest in consumer healthcare not just because it is cash-pay and insulated from reimbursement risk, but because the systemic, behavioral, and technology tailwinds are becoming increasingly apparent. What is less understood among investors—particularly those accustomed to investing in “traditional” healthcare—is how consumer healthcare lends itself to entrepreneurship. Although a few household brands are recognizable, the consumer healthcare landscape is dotted with asset-light, fast-growing, middle-market companies that have not taken much capital, but have built a brand, a technology, or a unique way of managing patient relationships that creates durable value.
There is also widespread confusion among investors about what consumer healthcare means, why it is a useful category of analysis, which business models and value-creation playbooks are most sustainable, and how to navigate rapidly evolving regulatory and compliance terrain. Our aim in this report is to make progress toward answering those questions, even as the industry continues to metamorphose. We believe consumer healthcare is a highly investable category—albeit one that must be navigated carefully—and offers the opportunity to shape the future of care delivery.
